"But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."Matthew 17:21
Why Some Things Require Both
Jesus said some spiritual breakthroughs require both prayer and fasting. Fasting without prayer is a diet. Prayer without fasting misses an additional dimension of spiritual intensity that some situations require.
When you combine them, you are not being more religious — you are applying more of yourself to the seeking.
A Sample Fasting Prayer Day
- 6am — Morning prayer: Open with worship and surrender for the day
- 9am — Mid-morning: When hunger hits, stop and pray specifically about your fasting intention
- 12pm — Midday: Instead of lunch, spend 15–20 minutes in Scripture and prayer
- 3pm — Afternoon: Intercede specifically for whoever or whatever prompted this fast
- 6pm — Evening: Thanksgiving prayer, closing the fast with gratitude
What to Pray During a Fast
🙏 Prayer
Lord, I am fasting today not to earn anything from You, but to express how serious I am about seeking You in this situation. I bring [specific need] to You with fasting and prayer. I declare that You are more important to me than food. Hear this prayer. Move in this situation. I trust You with the outcome. Amen.
